Interbase can also be altered by changing the system tables with SQL. I'd
only recommend size *increases* as you need to truncate the data manually
to decrease the size (and horrible things happen if you don't).
Do you want to do this during development or in a production environment,
where I would have thought it was much more dangerous.

MODIFY clause, which lets you do (quite reasonable) things like alter
the length of character columns.
I couldn't beleive it wasn't it in the SQL standard!
