If have appended below the contents of two newsgroup posts from Bill Karwin
on the topic of interbase + NT service packs. The first talks about SP5 not
being Interbase certified and the second talks about the 2 different SP4
releases, the second was a fix for the first which was a mess.

The below posts were made before SP6 was released the other day.

It makes for interesting reading.

We have no plans to certify IB 5.6 with SP5.

We have no reason to believe that SP5 is completely Y2K compliant, and
we have every reason to expect at least one more SP from Microsoft
before the end of the year. These assumptions are based on their track
record.

We are reluctant to spend our time running on the service pack
treadmill, especially given the dubious quality of several SP's from
Microsoft. We'd rather spend our time ensuring the quality of InterBase
6 and releasing it in a timely manner.

InterBase 5.5 and 5.6 with SP4 (the big one) do pass our criteria for
Y2K correct behavior. Y2K fixes in SP5 and later are assumed to be
corner cases, that do not affect Y2K correct operation of InterBase.

You have to understand that Microsoft is playing games. There were
*two* SP4 releases. The later one was larger than the first, but they
seem to have made no distinction between the two, except that the larger
one is referred to as the "full download" SP4. It is apparent that the
first SP4 broke a number of things, so they released SP4 II quickly.

The latter SP4 is what we certified InterBase 5.6 with. In order to do
a certification, we must stabilize a test environment some weeks prior
to completion of testing. Subsequently to this, Microsoft released SP5
and we've heard rumors of an SP6 coming. We're assuming there will be
another one before the end of the year.

There is nothing in the InterBase License Agreement that prevents you
from deploying InterBase on SP5 or SP6 or whatever. But let's be
frank: if you are rash enough to deploy a patched version of NT without
doing your own testing of it thoroughly, then I claim that InterBase
certification on the service pack is not your primary risk issue.

Hmmm, where did you hear that? We went from SP3 to 5
because 4 is a mess. Didn't notice any slowdown, but didn't
benchmark either.

...or IBObjects. Would be interesting if the purported "slowdown" only
affected via-BDE calls.

cheers,
