I recently upgraded to data_objects 0.9.10.1 to avoid sporadic "MySQL server
has gone away" errors, and ironically now they happen almost every few
minutes! Here are the installed gems:

data_objects (0.9.10.1, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
datamapper (0.9.9, 0.9.3)
dm-adjust (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-aggregates (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-ar-finders (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-cli (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-constraints (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-core (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-couchdb-adapter (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-is-list (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-is-nested_set (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-is-state_machine (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-is-tree (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-migrations (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-observer (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-querizer (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-rest-adapter (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-serializer (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-shorthand (0.9.9, 0.9.5)
dm-sweatshop (0.9.9, 0.9.8)
dm-timestamps (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
dm-types (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.3)
dm-validations (0.9.9, 0.9.8, 0.9.5, 0.9.3)
do_mysql (0.9.10.1)
do_sqlite3 (0.9.10.1, 0.9.9)

The MySQL server is version 5 and is running on a different machine than the
web server. The permissions, etc are all okay because it works at first. But
about 5 minutes later the connection dies. Under DO 0.9.9, I would receive
this error only sporadically, and a page refresh would fix it. So the
current problem is much worse.

I am looking at the MySQL docs for ideas, but so far I have had no luck.
