That's just the syntax.  It's from the SQL standard.  They're
wildcards. (see Gary's email)

I don't think so.  I mean, you could reduce things to just fetching
the tags field, but to a large extent (especially with the API exposed
by DM) strings are more or less opaque.  I don't think you can easily
tell the DB "These fields are space separated tag lists" without
something like a stored procedure.  So the processing would need to be
done in ruby.

You could also look at dm-tags (available as a gem, or from
