So, it looks like my example models aren't a good measure after all.
MySQL does appear to be doing the smart thing with a benchmark, at
least:

timings for 5k iterations:

single:     7.710000   0.370000   8.080000 ( 10.710893)
split:     11.290000   0.560000  11.850000 ( 13.927230)


Apologies for making the wrong assumption on the speed point of view.
It looks like I'm running into a different sort of issue with my
actual models.  Will try and build a better sample.
