Dear Datameet community, "Going cashless is less about money and more about data," one of the speakers rehearsing this afternoon for the upcoming 50p conference mentioned. Hence the need for more open data about cashless systems, and about payments and financial systems.
I, like many others in this group, have been concerned about the asymmetry of information in payments – about regulations, transaction costs, how user data will be utilized henceforth, etc. Over the last two months, I have been working on creating a forum where developers, lawyers, policy makers, payment businesses, open data advocates and other stakeholders come together to discuss and demystify information about payments. We need to make our concerns heard. I'd therefore like to invite all of you to be part of 50p <http://50p.in/2017>, an independent community of those who are concerned and passionate about payments and surrounding issues. I have put together the first edition of 50p conference on 24 and 25 January at the MLR Convention Centre, J P Nagar, Bangalore. URL: 50p.in/2017 At 50p, I hope the community will discuss some of the following debates: 1. *Data security:* what are the known and unknown vulnerabilities for wallets, cards, and payment gateways? How can businesses look at security from a preventive perspective rather than a set of reactive measures? 2. How can *individuals secure privacy of their transactions* in the absence of appropriate legal frameworks? What mechanisms does technology provide for this safeguard? 3. Where does the *law in India stand today on data security and consumer protection*? 4. Where and how can individuals and collective *access open data in payments and financial systems*, and how do we make sense of it? I hope that some of the talks by: 1. James Wilson on his experiences with accessing data from RBI websites, 2. Florian Dold on GNU Taler and secure web payments, 3. Malavika Raghavan and Apar Gupta on law and privacy, 4.
