*Is there an open-source mapping event at SOTM next month?* *Even o/w could this group have any suggestions on this:-*
For an ongoing project, we found only ~ 60% of National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in India are mapped with boundary information. Further, ~25% are not even mapped up to the point location. (The mapped dataset is available freely on IUCN portal.) Is there any scope at SOTM to organise a discussion or an exercise to increase coverage in this respect? This is easier now as a new opportunity has emerged since mandatory ESZs are notified for every Park in India. These notifications contain precise location data, contrary to past when only blurred toposheets were available, rendering it impossible to accurately judge the forest limits. Not to be emphasised enough, this project has global value for researchers. There is a lot of interest in how will economic growth and urbanisation in India will impact forests and biodiversity. Comprehensive, accurate and publicly available forest data is then a first step for any analysis. *I look forward to ideas! * *My email is [email protected] <[email protected]>.* Many thanks Siddhant -- [email protected] +91 8889616139 twitter: @siddnow -- Datameet is a community of Data Science enthusiasts in India.
