Yes, using cache mode with cached in old mode is the best strategy for huge 
installation.
Please check, tha you have "LogsOnly yes" command in your cached.conf, it's 
prevent running cached in new mode (which is used by default).

Running cached is making cahced database optimisation procedures in background, 
thus this bpring some activity even if no indexing is active.

The number of documents indexing is not depending on values of WrdFiles nor 
URLDataFiles . Those values are influenting only on performance indirectly, but 
exactly formula isn't derived yet.

If you're planning to run indexer from several different PC, please consider to 
use stored daemon also, to store compressed copies of documents indexed. This 
database is used to construct excerts on search words entered. And this 
database should be at the same PC where cached is, for better performance.
