Nice write up. Very interesting stuff.

You mentioned that you wished for "The ability to place readable comments in
the reports which do not affect output".

Since your meaningful output is done to a file and presumably no one sees
what goes to the screen when the report is running, have you considered
using the following to annotate your reports?

---Turn File Off---
This is a comment ...
---Turn File On---

You could even bold or underline the comment text so that it would stand out
colorwise from the rest of the report text when you're editing the report.

Just a thought.
