Hi Tim,
Yes the problem with that, is that if you are polling the output file to see
if you can get an exclusive lock on it to determine when it has completed
then turning the file off in the report, allows the file to be lockedby the
other process... Its only really relevant for long reports complex reports
where you might get a time out from the webclient but that is where you need
the most comments...
But, I will try that in shorter reports that have no concerns for
timeouts...
Thanks for that
Bye
Brian

Brian,
Nice write up. Very interesting stuff.
You mentioned that you wished for "The ability to place readable comments
in
the reports which do not affect output".
Since your meaningful output is done to a file and presumably no one sees
what goes to the screen when the report is running, have you considered
using the following to annotate your reports?
---Turn File Off---
This is a comment ...
---Turn File On---
You could even bold or underline the comment text so that it would stand
out
colorwise from the rest of the report text when you're editing the report.
Just a thought.

<SNIP>
If I had a wishlist for DataPerfect it would include
1. The ability to place readable comments in the reports which do not
affect
output
2. Named Report variables
3. Chaining or subroutining of one report with another report, to make
reusable report blocks.
4. Being able to direct DP output to STDOUT
5. Some array handling... or indirect referencing...
6. Long string handling could be useful, but basically I do that all in
ther
Perl scripts which has spectacular text handling ability.
This application has generated a lot of interest for the task it was
intended to do... I now just have to get it over the line...
Anyway, thats where things are up to...
Regards
Brian
