Are you using a User ID panel in your database and having users log in? Yes and No. There are User Id panels for record relationship purposes but I've not used the DP Menu system. Up til now I've used the Citrix logon to Control users access to the databases . Each gets their own folder with program shortcuts for the databases they need access to, on login - most don't even have a desktop that they can move around in. (I like a simple life :-) and only a couple have been using Dpspool due to the printing problems we had. Actually I have eased up the controls a little since I set up the system in 1987 - users ARE a little more computer savy than they were back then. So far user initials haven't caused a problem and we use that alot anyway when not using dpspool either as a means of selecting records for printing quotes (multi-user) want Quote 13456 - 13463 but only those with CR initials, or for signature at bottom of printed quote letter. But I take on board your suggestion should the greater use of DPSpool starts to cause me headaches down the track. Its also nice to have a backup plan to implement if needed - Thanks Tim.
BTW we haven't stayed on the 28mhz machine with an 80mb harddrive running 5 users under C-Dos (Concurrent Dos) that we started with in 87 - we've keep up a little. C-Dos was a nice one to cut my teeth on :-( (bit of a nightmare looking back) We went to System Manager in the 90's - An Austalian C-Dos version which abled menus to be used and was actually very good - had a print spooler and all. But it wasn't Y2K compliant and I understand System manager was taken over by Citrix so they could get the code and SM was discontinued and we were forced to go to Citrix and NT4 in 2000. The box has been upgraded since but the OS does all we want presently and hopefully will see me out. I'm sure we all have similar stories to tell regarding the rate of change in IT but I remember Lew at the L.A. Conference relating the story of the early computer he did the database prior to dataperfect programming on, that only had 2 x 5 1/4 floppies in it and how he thought he was "made" when he got his hands on one with a (I think) 10mb harddrive. Speaking of Lew - Has anyone been in touch with him lately - just wondering how he's getting on ?
