Hi Charles,

Good luck with the switch, I think you will be relatively safe with the change
but it is good to be cautious... By the way, I wrote myself a DP Cheatsheet,
which if you glance over it you might see some new features since 2.3c which
may make your job easier, http://www.brileigh.com/DPCheatsheet.pdf

By the way, you do not need to be developing public web applications to take
advantage of DP web's capabilities... For example In almost ever major DP
application I have written there has been an element of Customer Relationsihp
Management. Occasionally calls by clients are part of an "incident", that
ideally one person should by default handle, or customer might have been
assigned to specific customer servcies people or teams of people. With VoIP
PABX's (IPBX) DataPerfect could easily make your phones smarter. Most IPBX's
support XML based inbound dial plans, using your DP application could could add
a few tables that allow the phone system to enquire on the DP application and
route calls to the correct people. Because DP is so quick and easy for
creating XML solutions, the sky is the limit, perhaps by using VoiceXML your
application could provide messages to users about the status of their
shipments. VoIP PBX hardware is quite inexpensive and if you have clients
still using DP applications then being able to add this level of technology on
top of DP could keep them running for years more.

Things Down Under are great... Jake is almost 15 months old now... I have cut
my official work week down to 3 days so I can look after him the other 2
days...

I haven;t been back to England for a while, my father passed away nearly 2
years ago now... I am glad we had the opportunity to meet each other before he
died...

I have only just got back from a vacation through Russia Mongolia and China...
it was great fun... Its hard getting back into the swing of work...

Regards
Brian

  Hi Brian,

I'm not using DP for any web applications. Mine is a more traditional use --
the one I showed you in California.

I think I'll make my changes in 2.3c, then when that all looks good, test a
switch to 2.6. That way, if there are changes or problems, I know where they
came from.

  Thanks.

BTW, how are things down your way? How's England?

  Charlie

    Hi Charles,

Version 2.6x supports commandline arguments to import a file in a DP
Transaction Log format. /EI-filename So for example if you had an application
that you wished to import data from, you could take its output massage it into
the Transaction Log format and directly import it into DP. I use this for
dynamic web application with DP as the backend database... It brings the
reliability power and simplicity of DP as a multiuser database and allows you
to do things that were unimagineable with the previous versions.

If you are using DP for any production of HTML reports, then the new
feature of conversion of the ampersand symbol and other standard XML entities
to their web form makes life alot easier. For instance when using the ;W field
print indicator on am alphanumeric field contain an "&" charcter it is
converted to & in the ouput which will be correctly interpreted in a
browser. It makes creation of XML files a breeze which means you can use DP
together with many more applications.

You mentioned that you are worried about having to rework reports... I
can't remember having to do that, except for a minor bug relating to creation
of WordPerfect merge files. But it is a simple thing to get around.

    Brian

      Hi back to you Brian,

      Nice to hear from you.

In 2.3c, panel links are restricted to the related child records.
There's an old saying that says, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." When I
read about others having to rework reports, etc., I got gun shy.

What are the improvements? What do you mean by an alternate means of
importing records with web potential?

      Charlie

        G'day Charles,

One issue would possibly be the traversing of Panel Links with the F5
key... In 2.3c is gave you access to all records in the target/child panel
link and not just the ones related to the displayed record.

I can't think of anything else, except to say that I am surprised you
hadn't upgraded long before now.... and why wouldn't you move up to the
lastest version 2.6x, which give you an alternate means of importing records
with web potential, as well as a few other nice things.

        Bye
        Brian

          Hi Everybody,

I have to make some changes to a database I built years ago. I
thought the might be the right time to upgrade from 2.3c to 2.6h. But before I
did so, I wanted to find out what the differences are, and whether it would
necessitate changing reports. I read that there were report changes that had
to be made when upgrading from the 2.2x series.

          Thanks.
