Rich - there is a lot of sentiment against the recently passed drink tax legislation but a lot more sentiment against any increase in property taxes. The State Legislature only gave the County a few options for raising revenue and the drink tax is the only one that generates substantial income without further taxing property. I often challenge election petitions and in this case would be organizing an effort to challenge the petition asking for a referendum to be placed on the ballot thus blocking the challenge.
Many major American cities have a drink tax. Chicago, Cleveland, Portland, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, Atlanta and Seattle, among others, have been taxing drinks for years. Despite the dire warning of the restaurant lobby, business at establishments that serve liquor have seen no more of decrease in sales than restaurants that don't serve liquor. It would be my wish to have the County have alternative taxing options but this is the choice that the Republican State Senate gave us.
