Yes odd is right - First thought the 3rd child record of that particular
parent record in question had been deleted, as on entering child panel to
edit 3rd record for a 2nd time, it was not there. Took a while to twig that
it was, but was now the last (20th) related child record because it had
taken on a new (last) number and had changed position as a result of lookup
index based on auto number being used. A check of backup records from
previous day showed originally all was as it should be, and that my editing
the record the next day brought about the change.
Further editing of other child records showed the scenario could be
duplicated readily (but not every time) and a new number was sometimes
automatically given to an edited record on saving. - really really strange
I re-indexed the panel and everything has been fine since - so fingers
crossed

Thanks again Ralph for your input

Regards

Colin
