Yes odd is right - First thought the 3rd child record of that particular parent record in question had been deleted, as on entering child panel to edit 3rd record for a 2nd time, it was not there. Took a while to twig that it was, but was now the last (20th) related child record because it had taken on a new (last) number and had changed position as a result of lookup index based on auto number being used. A check of backup records from previous day showed originally all was as it should be, and that my editing the record the next day brought about the change. Further editing of other child records showed the scenario could be duplicated readily (but not every time) and a new number was sometimes automatically given to an edited record on saving. - really really strange I re-indexed the panel and everything has been fine since - so fingers crossed
