You are correct. However, when Tame (or XP idle sensitivity setting) is set to make DP behave better, it sometimes overcompensates and doesn't give DP sufficient time to finish tasks like executing reports, updating the screen, etc. This is what it sounds like might be happening to Ralph. Only when the keyboard is active is DP given enough time to update the lookup display.
When that happens, a press or hold on the shift key gives clock ticks back to DP long enough for it to complete its task.
