This from my archive of useful tips!
If P1F1 is a freeform text field such as A25A4, the following will put
individual lines into seperate Report Variables:
Line 1 of P1F1: subfield[P1F1;0;1]
Line 2 of P1F1: subfield[P1F1;0;2]
Line 3 of P1F1: subfield[P1F1;0;3]
etc.
The subfield[P1F1;0;n] formula should work in a regular text field too.

regular text fields (Ax) so I can use substring/subfield functions and
embed characters?
