That's what I did in the end. I re-used the first report that computed the
8.3 filenames to write out a batch file with the move commands and it worked
fine.

Hi Tony,

You certainly could be creating all of your output files and the batch
file in the same report.

However, I find it simpler to have one report create all the files
with 8.3 names, and then, after it completes, I run a separate report
that creates the batch file with the move commands. Each move command
mentions the 8.3 name and the desired long name.

For convenience, I place two computed fields is the panel that drives
the report. One computes the 8.3 name and the other computes the
desired long name. This makes it very easy to write the two reports.
