Hi Brian, Again thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
I checked some of the web hosting outfits offering Apache and the one I'm leaning towards is called BlueHost.Com. I spoke with their customer service and 2 things stood out compared to the others; I quickly got a live person on the line and that he was informative and helpful. What makes it even better is that they're only charging usd3.95/mo (limited time offer) for unlimited disk space, unlimited transfer, host unlimited domains, 2500 pop/imap email accounts, etc. Unlimited tech support included in package. They run CGI, Ruby, Perl, PHP, MySQL Now I have to do some modifications to my database (nothing to do with BlueHost) before I can put it online. Thanks again for your help. Hi Ed, I have only looked for providers in Australia, rather that the USA, and I could not find anyone running Apache on Windows, but I soon found a host that would give me DOSEMU on their Linux server, I have used them for a few projects. I think there should be quite a few US providers though. It is also possible to run Apache on the same server as IIS, just using a different port address, and that might be an option too. For the DP web application stuff it would be easy to quarantine that to a different port address, so you could run the static webpages using the standard Port 80, and just makes calls to the script pages using a different post address. I have run application on Linux with DOSEMU for a few years without so much as a hiccup, and although I take a little hit from the extra time taken for loading up DOSEMU then DOS then DP.EXE and the application, it is not unmanageable. If you do not mind hosting your application in Australia then my hosting company has been great. http://www.anchor.com.au/ I am using their starter plan which costs about USD13.50 a month and gives me 100Mb disk space, 5Gb data transfer per month, plus a range of other facilities. When I first setup DOSEMU they charged me about USD40.00 but when I set up on a different server last time they did it free for me. It needs to run on a 32-bit Linux server and not their 64-bit servers. Even on this basic plan they support dynamic content through CGI-BIN: Perl, Python, Tcl, or PHP or ASP/.Net. You can pay by secure credit card... An advantage of starting with them is that if you have problems I might be able to help you through some of them, and that they have experience with someone running a DOS app on their servers. When I first started they were worried about utilisation and other issues, but they got comfortable very quickly... A disadvantage is that their customer support is open during Australia office hours (which I guess could be a bonus if you do a lot of this work at night) If you do find other webhosters for this then please let me know, it wouild be nice to have a few options. Hi Brian, My web host told me that their server is on heavily modified IIS (not Apache) and will not give anymore info because they say it is proprietary info. They say it is possible to configure what I want but only if I hire their Professional Desk. Maybe I should look for a web hosting company running Apache Server. Know of any? Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply. I have to research with my web hosting provider but from what you say, it seems like the best course is to host my website locally on my own machine (ouch!). I'm putting a call in now to my web host provider. Thanks. Hi Ed, I have my DataPerfect applications hosted at an independent web hosting company... However you have to be able to get DataPerfect to be executed via the HTTP server... If the web host uses Apache then it works fine, but of course if it is on Linux, you need the web hoster to install a DOS Emulator such as DOSEMU... I have never been able to install it directly in my own space, but rather have had to get the web oster to install it. If you have an Apache webserver on Windows it works well, and this would be my recommended choice except that it is rare to find this configuration since Windows servers come with IIS. ... if it is Miscrosoft IIS, unless you can get them to agree to execution of console applications, a registry setting which they will probably not know much about then, it will not work... You need to upload the application into into your account space on the web hoster's server,... You will need to know the paths to the various components so that your scripts can find the database, and the DP executable... Ideally you should keep the DP application away from the public HTML part of the site, including the scripts folders, otherwise there is a risk of someone could directly access the files, as that could make your day unpleasant. Did you take a look at the tutorial http://www.brileigh.com/dpweb/tutorial/ Brian -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ed Marfil, MAST UNITED Sent: Tuesday, 11 August 2009 9:39 AM To: 'Dataperfect Users Discussion Group' Subject: [Dataperf] Web query connection to DP. This is something Brian touched on sometime ago and I've been trying to work on it off and on, but thus far have been frustrated. I'm trying to have a user populate a data field (ticket number) on a web page, then send it to a DP database on my local machine where specific data attached to that ticket number will be sent back to the user. My website hosting is outsourced and not on my local machine. Is this possible or does the web hosting have to be on the same local machine or network as the DP database? As always, this group's guidance is much appreciated.
