Beats me!

1) Does your scanner documentation claim that it can read "3 of 9" barcodes?

2) Did you print the barcode in a point-size that the scanner can recognize?
You might try printing a variety of point-size barcodes and see which one the
scanner likes best.

3) Did you get a clean print-out (i.e. sharp lines, no toner fading or missing
ink)?

4) Have you tried standing on one foot wearing no sock while holding a lump of
stinky cheese in your right hand and using the scanner with your left hand?

Any other ideas I have are about as useful as number 4...

Thanks, Christopher, for the font link.

Juan, to generate a barcode using this font (after you copy the ttf files to
your Windows/Fonts folder), the DPSpool code would look like something this:

  <244>R<244><244>FFree 3 of 9 Extended<244><244>P12<244>*1234567890*<244>R<244>

<244>R<244> resets the all of the font settings to defaults
  <244>FFree 3 of 9 Extended<244> selects the 'Free 3 of 9 Extended' font
<244>P12<244> selects 12 point size (use whatever size you need)
*1234567890* generates the barcode for 1234567890 (note that the *'s at each
end are needed to make the barcode readable by a scanner)
<244>R<244> resets the all of the font settings back to defaults

this is the one I use:
    http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/free3of9.shtml
Use the extended version for full ascii.
you just need to use the font selection codes for DPSpool to choose the
font, and wrap the barcode data in asterisks.

If you're talking about a Postnet (US Postal Service) barcode, both
DPPrint and DPSpool can print a zip code as a bar code using the ;;P field
modifier.

If you're talking about other bar codes, you will likely have to find a
bar code font and then select it using the DPSpool font codes.
