Hi All;

I am in the process of switching from DP running on XP to running 64-bit Windows7 and then running DP from within a 32-bit Win7 VM using VMWare player (though the results may apply elsewhere).

I found a few facts that may be useful to others going down this path:

 * Its ok to host the files on a 64-bit OS, just don't run the program
 * It can take hours to do all the updates from the base OS - if you
have a way to clone the machine for later, that may be worth some
money (say going to VMWare Workstation)
 * Files written by Datapefect to c:\ on Win7 were written to
   c:\users\USERNAME\appdata\virtualstore
 * I was able to get Tame5.1 to work, but not TAME6.
 * In order to get TAME to work, I had to manually copy tamevxd.dll to
   c:\windows\system32\
 * If you are using VMWare - don't have the printer connect on startup
   - it can flood your network with connection attempts and claim all
   your bandwidth
 * The default printer setup by VMWare may claim LPT1 - so use LPT2 and
LPT3 if that works for you
 * Run the VM network Adapter in bridge mode - which will give the VM a
separate IP address from the host -that may be an issue if you have
   limited IPs for some reason
 * Make sure to have HyperThreading and TurboBoost enabled in the BIOS
of the host (apparently some ship un-enabled)
 * Enable flow control VM network card from within the OS

The last 2 combined made about a 10x difference in execution times on the dump of data from one screen. That is a fancy way of saying that the box with the 15X faster CPU now can now run DP somewhat faster than the XP box and that the first time I tried the experiment I was surprised and very puzzzled

Also, in my case, DP ran fastest when both the program and data were local - they ran a bit slower when hosted on a network drive.

I would also plan on installling an anti-virus program on the VM just to be on the safe side- you never know when someone will decide to use that machine to surfing the web

Bob
