That's very nice. Very cool indeed. I need to give it a more through
workout, but my first impressions are very good.

It is perhaps something that could be used with web enabling DP on a Windows
Server rather than through DOSEMU under Linux. This might make the choices
of commercial webhosting far easier, and the operation of DP Web enabling
easier. Even my commercial webhoster that I currently run DP on, is giving
me a hard time about continuing the use of a 32-bit OS server, so it seemed
my DP web days were numbered.

For the past few months, I have been working on a project where I have been
using Windward Reports, www.windward.net for a document generation system.
The origins of my project go back to 1991 when I first used DataPerfect,
with PlanPerfect, DrawPerfect and and then WordPerfect (under shell macros)
for merging the complex documents. My client eventually wanted it in Windows
so from about 2000 it has been using Microsoft Access, but still using
Windows WordPerfect for the merging, (I used the WordPerfect SDK and have
been creating native-looking WP51 Secondary files from Access). Recently my
clients needed the documents generated to also be created in Chinese, which
killed off WordPerfect being non-Unicode. I have been looking for a good
merge replacement for WordPerfect for some time, as I used some very complex
merging systems and the newer versions of WP do not work so well, and
Microsoft could easily do something to stop the decade old version of WP
that we have had to use from working.

A few years ago I stumbled on Windward which looked good but I could not get
any of my clients to commit to it, but because it uses Word (or a couple of
other document formats) as the templates and supported Unicode it was the
ideal replacement when Chinese became a necessity. I have moved from the WP
Secondary file export from Access to XML (which is a preference for me
anyway). Anyway I have fallen in love with Windward in a way only previously
reserved for DataPerfect. The documents it creates are absolutely awesome.
Exporting XML in Access is not so awesome. ( but exporting XML in DP is also
awesome. )

I have to say that I had given up on DP, I still love it - but the
opportunities of me using it have diminished. vDos, might just be an
answer, and if I can web enable it to run on a Windows 64bit server
platform, and then use it with Windward, (which I could use either from the
remote desktop or from the server) to deliver Word, Excel, PDF or HTML
output. The Chinese output would have precluded DP's use in my recent the
project since it is not Unicode, but it would work for many other things.

It could bring together two of the only really passions I have had in the
computer world, first was DP and now Windward.

Bye

Yes, Michael, let's experiment.

Here's a small manual to go along.

Put all files in ONE folder. To test it, put the files in c:\dp

Use your own dp.exe and dp.sys if you like. Otherwise the two files from
2009 are in this package.

Control + C will open Windows clipboard with ALL text from the visible DP
panel

Control + V will copy ALL text from the Windows clipboard into the field
where the cursor is

To scale the screen use F11 en F12. (Looks really great!)

You cannot close DP from the box. Use crtl+alt+delete if you are stuck.

You can minimize DP. Top right corner.

You can use it on a network. Play around with the autoexec. Let's say your
network files are on v:

Then your autoexec.txt look like:

use v: v:\db

use c: c:

c:

cd \dp

dp v:\members

exit

I don't know which features will be needed in the future. Mail me and we'll
see what we can do.

Personally I've come across a problem with exporting data from a field into
a file.

I worked my way around it.

So I guess we need to make a list of the things we need to be added or
changed.

And then we'll ask Jos Schaars if he can implement these features.

Looks pretty good Gerard,

Time to experiment a little.

Please pass on my thanks to your friend.

Guys, it didn't take two weeks. We did some finetuning today.

I'm not a programmer, so please don't ask me technical questions.

If it needs finetuning the source code is available (through me) for those
who need it.

Good luck with it.

(I guess Udo will put it on the DP site if you all are satisfied.)

Please add me to the list of interested people.

Apparently you never get over your first database.

Merry Christmas..

It's wonderful to hear of this possibility. Thanks! (Will it work also with
DP 2.3 or only with a newer version of DP?)

Excuse my additional question, because it does not concern directly this
matter: Does this software perhaps make run also WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS on
a Win7 or Win8 platform (64 bits)?

Regards,

Valentin (Austria)

(Sorry, Charles, first I failed to send this email to the Group)

Charles ( and others), give me a week or two and I will present you software
that makes DP work with 64 bits. It's fantastic under Win 7 and Win 8. And
No need of Tame.

I stumbled across this guy on the internet, who lives 50 miles from me. I
will meet him soon and we will finetune his software. By the way, it's free.
And easy to use.

Source code, all available if someone needs it.

Gerard

Hi Everybody,

Happy Holidays! Just remember, if you don't celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas,

Question: Does DP and other DOS programs work with Windows 8?

Thanks.
