Hi Don,
I agree that while VDOS is handy, it is also considerably slower when
running reports and crunching data. :(
An alternative to dual-booting might be to set up a virtual PC to run
your DOS environment in. You could use Microsoft's VPC product, or
something like Oracle VirtualBox. The advantage to that would be it
would be easier to share the data between programs running on the host
OS and those running in the virtual one. And you can switch back and
forth between them on the fly.
As far as the OS to run on the virtual PC goes, I'd probably go with
something like Windows 98SE rather than actual DOS. That gives you the
DOS underpinnings while still providing networking ability (to share the
data with the host PC). And you don't have to worry with activation
issues like you would if you installed XP.
Just my 2 cents.

Seeking some guidance with an issue I'm not at all familiar with.
While I am using Joe's Schaar's VDOS with DP on Win7 and Win8
machines, I find that using it for large database imports and reports
is simply too slow. Dependable, yes. But also slow. Using the DOS
prompt on Win7 works except for some untraceable reason I lose access
to the window and have to literally exit the dos window and go back in
to get access. I can't believe I'm doing myself any favors with that
scenario.
So what I'm thinking of doing is taking a laptop and mounting a dual
boot system on it where I could boot to a DOS prompt with no Windows
involvement, do my work in DP, and then boot back into Windows to do
my other work accessing the data I generate in DP which may be for
spreadsheets, editing and etc. Now of course I used to do this all in
DOS but the tools in Windows are now my standard.
I'm asking because over the next number of months I'll be on the road
a bit and have to be productive while I'm gone, I have a lot to do. My
databases are fairly large so allowing the time for VDOS to accomplish
it isn't really an option.
So my basic question has to do with dual booting and if my concept is
viable.
By the way, it's been so long since I've seen a posting here that I
began to wonder if I was still subscribed. I'll soon find out.
