When you create a subreport based on an existing link in your panel, the subreport uses the index associated with the link. You can't change the index without editing the link.
If you want to use a different index, you should create a 'Subreport Using Virtual Link' which allows you to pick the panel, index, and link field list you want to use for the subreport, on the fly. This is a very useful tool for generating custom reports without having to modify your database structure.
