Not yet, but yes NEWS says :
A "classic" option to restore the previous default behaviour is to be
discussed and confirmed.
Maybe :
options(datatable.bywithoutby = TRUE)
is all that's needed. Will do.

Quite a few related bugs and feature requests get resolved by
