I'd say McAfee coz i work there :) but it's not free.
Whatever AV you choose to be installed in a mail gateway, the most important
thing is how fast you can update dat files.
This coz like an old Italian way of saying state :
"It's useless to close the doors when cows are already escaped"
When there's a virus outbreak it could be a matter of 15..30 minutues to be hit.
McAfee has a gateway appliance for SMTP scanning that "phone home" every 10 minutes
for updates.
The appliance ( abviously ) is not free but for Big Co. that price is almost nothing
compared to the cost of being hit by a virus outbreak.
About XMail filtering for viruses, a couple of days ago I saw a free tool in FreshMeat
named something like MIME-defang.
It should be written in perl and I think it could be modified to work with XMail.
