There are two possible causes. First, if the remote SMTP server tries to validate the complete sender address with : HELO ... MAIL FROM:<> RCPT TO:<sender-address> and your XMail server is configured to reject empty "MAIL FROM:<>" you will likely get bounces. The other reason is the DNS/network.
