Actually it is not true about space. The RFC822 states that :

addr-spec -> local-part "@" domain

local-part -> word *("." word)

word -> atom / quoted-string

quoted-string -> <"> *(qtext/quoted-pair) <">

qtext -> <any CHAR except <">, "\" and CR, including LWS>
                                           ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
