I might look into that, but as I intend to use the pins the LEDS occupy as inputs, so will come up with some sort of design, possibly one that leaves the LEDS in place.
It is my understanding that this can be done, then it should simply be a matter of reading the right value from the IC. It would have been nice if they included this functionality in the first place!
