FYI I found what the problem was - too many files in the /dev directory. I don't know why it worked fine on my debian host, but once I removed most of the static devices, things started to mount properly on the DaVinci target.

On the target I have /proc/mtd: dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 01000000 00020000 "mtdram test device" I create an image, copy the image in the exact same way as I did on the host. When I try to mount it, it takes minutes (its size is around 8 MiB). When I attempt to cd into /mnt/dev (My small filesystem's dev directory), the system freezes completely. I can cd into /mnt/bin, and some other directories, but /mnt/dev always dies.
