Yes, the initial root FS is mtd3 which is 512MB. There is also an mtd4 which is 2GB - (512M + 8M) or a bit under 1.5GB. You can mount this, put your filesystem there and change your u-boot environment to boot off mtd4 as the root. Have a look at your console messages when the kernel boots, it lists which partitions are configured.
