And let's throw my personal favorite, IBM Informix, into the mix, too. Your best bet for estimating cost is probably to ask on each database's user group mailing list for recommendations. Each choice comes with its own set of cost factors that you must carefully weigh against each other: Hardware requirements, initial licensing cost, if any, maintenance cost, if any, how many DBAs you need and how expensive they are, etc. When you do ask for those recommendations, be prepared not only to mention the data volume and query rate, but also the expected number of users, whether the database should be replicated, how much downtime you can afford for routine maintenance tasks, for backups, and for product upgrades. All those factors can play a role in making a decision.
