Read it from disk !

There is exist an alternative to traditional TCP/IP based approach.

Newframe's Data Sharing Suite (NFDSS) is a set of tools that
enables Open System to efficiently access the mainframe disks.
NFDSS Server provide fast ODBC/JDBC Access from Open Systems to
the original MVS/390 system, as well as migration /load
of data from the mainframe to most common data bases on Open Systems.

The NFDSS server run on UNIX/NT box and read mainframe data
directly through a storage controller that is shared between the UNIX/NT
box
and the mainframe.

Most storage manufacturers ( EMC, HDS) provide a physical connection in
their disk
controllers, enabling the controller to be shared between the mainframe
and the Open System.

NFDSS server uses this feature to provide ODBC/JDBC access to DB2, VSAM,
IMS or sequential file data.
