our generic JDBC driver in fact does not support the character set, it has even
been removed from the UI a long time ago. However, in the MySQL/JDBC UI, it is
still present - but never used.
Instead of removing the option from the UI, we should enhance the MySQL-bridge
to evaluate this setting, and extend the connection URL with the
"characterEncoding" parameter, taking the value for this parameter from the
setting made in the UI.
