I'm more than happy if I can be of any help on this issue.

I have a question if it is in the driver sphere (not that I understand the full
implications of this).
The reason I say this is because under my java application if I use
dbConn = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/kishkush?characterEncoding=Hebrew", "root", "han");

then everything works. If it were the mysql driver, I would expect this to fail.
I could still be wrong, but that is the way it looks at this moment.
