the build was checked against an ancient gtk version which places pangox into
GTK2_LIBS:

>pkg-config --modversion gtk+-2.0
2.4.1

>pkg-config --libs-only-l gtk+-2.0
-lgtk-x11-2.0 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lm -lpangoxft-1.0
-lpangox-1.0 -lpango-1.0 -lgobject-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0

with that gtk and the chosen gtk2 toolkit, changing the COREXFONTS default seems
to make sense to me to avoid running into the erro cloph has described. as i
understand this error, it's caused by disabling all kinds of fonts.

leaving COREXFONTS default untouched and removing "--disable-xft" helps with the
mentioned compiling problems on linux. checking side effects now...
