I see now that the documents on the IBM web page for which I had a bookmark were dated 3/97. I clicked around and found another page with newer versions of the documents (e.g. 3/2003 for the Syntax Guide).

I tried NVL on our Informix server, and it does accept the function, and it does appear to work as expected.
