It seems to be only a problem with the installer, not with the libraries
themselves. I made a tar file of a working 8.1.7 client install some
time ago (don't remember what system it was, Redhat 6.2 or 7.3), and
whenever I need a client installation, I just unpack that tar file. So
far it has worked on all Redhat (including RHEL3 and FC2) and SuSE
systems I tried it on (not sure if I tried Debian). In hindsight I
should have made an RPM, not a tar file.
