Thanks Martin,
Unfortunately unsetting ORACLE_HOME didn't fix that problem (i.e.
OCIEnvCreate still fails).

Michael,
I think with InstantClient OCIEnvCreate fails if you set ORACLE_HOME. You
need
to make sure libclntsh.so is on your dynamic linker search path
(LD_LIBRARY_PATH) and do /not/ set ORACLE_HOME.
