How Much Are You Really Worth?
“As the scripture says, “All mankind are like grass, and all their glory is like wild flowers. The grass withers, and the flowers fall.” 1 Peter 1:24, T.E.V. Do you think you are pretty important and that you are worth a great deal? Did you ever stop to think how much you would sell for in the supermarket? One lab technician states that the human body contains enough fat to make seven bars of soap, enough iron to make a medium-sized nail, and sugar sufficient to fill a sugar bowl. The lime in a human body would be sufficient to whitewash a six-by-ten-foot room, and the phosphorus would provide enough material for 2,200 match tips. There is ample sulphur, the lab technician declares, to kill a few score of fleas, enough potassium to explode a toy cannon, and sufficient magnesium for one medicinal dose. Add it all up and, even in these days of currency inflation, it isn’t a very staggering dollar figure – probably not more than ten dollars at the most. Fortunately, God and our fellow human beings don’t value us by the drugstore market. Still, it is a sobering thought that, considering the pharmaceutical value of our bodies, we aren’t so great after all. Jesus, even while we are going in the way of sin and the world, sees in us something precious. The Saviour’s parable of the pearl of great price reminds us that this is true. This story reveals Jesus’ seeking those who are very precious to Him: “Christ, the heavenly merchantman seeking goodly pearls, saw in lost humanity the pearl of great price. In man, defiled and ruined by sin, He saw the possibilities of redemption. Hearts that have been the battleground of the conflict with Satan, and that have been rescued by the power of love, are more precious to the Redeemer than are those who have never fallen. God looked upon humanity, not as vile and worthless; He looked upon it in Christ, saw it as it might become through redeeming love.” – Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 118. What a beautiful thought! What a wonderful truth! Though physically we are worth but little, Jesus Christ our Lord considers us of great worth. He valued us enough to give His life to save us.
