The Story Of The Little Lamb

“The rich man … took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that
was come to him.” 2 Samuel 12:4

One of the Bible writers can tell the story much better than I can. Let’s
read it from The Living Bible, Paraphrased. (Remember, a paraphrase is not
presented as an accurate translation of the Bible. It’s a modern rendering
of the Scriptures and is not always exactly as God gave it to the Bible
writers. We have to be careful in using paraphrases, but often they are
beautiful and do tell the story accurately.)

“So the Lord sent the prophet Nathan to tell David this story:

“There were two men in a certain city, one very rich, owning many flocks of
sheep and herds of goats; and the other very poor, owning nothing but a
little lamb he had managed to buy. It was his children’s pet and he fed it
from his own plate and let it drink from his own cup; he cuddled it in his
arms like a baby daughter. Recently a guest arrived at the home of the rich
man. But instead of killing a lamb from his own flocks for food for the
traveler, he took the poor man’s lamb and roasted it and served it’” (2
Samuel 12:14).

David had sinned. He had broken the seventh commandment. He had also broken
the commandment that says, “Thou shalt not kill.” He was both an adulterer
and a murderer.

It wasn’t easy for Nathan, the prophet, to go to David and rebuke him for
his sin. David was Nathan’s king! He could easily have ordered the prophet
killed for his impertinence.

Notice how tactfully and yet how effectively Nathan revealed David’s great
sin to him. He told the story of a little lamb. It was this story that
created hatred for the sin in David’s heart.

Then Nathan told him plainly, “’You are that rich man!’” (verse 7).

The lesson I want you to get from our text today is that the story of a
little lamb broke David’s heart and led him to see that he was a sinner who
deserved to die. And it is the story of a Lamb – Jesus, the Lamb of God –
His death that still makes men and women, boys and girls, sorry for their
sins and mistakes today – sorry enough to stop them.
