Smiles, on the wings of triumphal times, no longer swirl merrily round and round, Nor are voices joyfully singing in a rejoicing melodic sound. Heavy rain begins to cascade and pour, And the harsh pounding force of the wind thrusts incessantly pounding, Upon each and every building door. Raging floods swell the tranquil waters into mountain peaks so high, As thunder and lightning ignites fear in the darkness of a weeping sky. Tidal waves, on the wings of fury and might, race so very fast, As peace and serenity become relics of the once carefree and peaceful past. War rages in a hateful and killing blaze, As fog opaques all in a milky haze. In gloom's icy grip, the entire world seems to be, And as we lift our voices to God above, All we ask is for caring and paternal solace and soothing doses of caring love. The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring, Its summer blossoms scent the air; Yet wait till winter comes again, And who will call the wild-briar fair? Then, scorn the silly rose-wreath now, And deck thee with holly's sheen, That, when December blights thy brow, He still may leave thy garland green.
