Whatsoever He Says

“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
John 2:5.

You remember Jesus’ first miracle, don’t you? Of course. It was during a
marriage feast in Cana of Galilee. The wine was gone, and the host was
embarrassed. Jesus’ mother explained the situation to her Son. Though His
response seems a bit abrupt, and it didn’t sound as if Jesus was going to
help, Mary had faith. She turned to the servants and spoke the words of our
test: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

When the servants obeyed, blessing came to the wedding party. The need was
supplied. The best wine (unfermented grape juice) of the whole day was
produced by Jesus just speaking the word. It paid to do what Jesus said.

It always pays to do what Jesus says – today, in school, at home, or
wherever we are –just as it did two thousand years ago. Obeying Jesus never
goes out of fashion or becomes outdated for the Christian.

Mr. Webster says that the word obey means “to follow the commands or
guidance of, to comply with.” When we talk about obeying Jesus we mean
following carefully what He tells us to do in His Word. When He says, “Thou
shalt not steal, “ we avoid all dishonesty. When He says, “Thou shalt not
bear false witness,” We know He means to always be truthful – never lie,
never gossip.

We know that Jesus loved us enough to give His life for us, so He would
never ask us to do something that would not be for our best welfare. We can
trust what He says. We will be better and happier people when we do what He
tells us. If we disobey His Word and steal we find ourselves in trouble with
the law and with other people. We might even end up in jail. When we gossip
we hurt people and close friends. If we lie, people soon learn that they can’t
trust us. There is always good reason to do what Jesus tells us to do. It’s
for our good.

Jesus never compels us to do what He says. He doesn’t make us follow Him.
“Christ saves none against their choice; He compels none to obedience.” –
Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 457. We are reminded, “He will reward obedience with
the richest blessings.” – Counsels on Stewardship, p. 91.

“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
