Hello Gwen, Well unfortnately I don't think googlegroups doesn't have like yahoogroups setting where each member want to change theirs mail status to normal,no mail,digest mail and unsubscribe . That's why you will have to get googlegroups membership to change your own mail status with your googlemail account so you will have to get an googlemail account to change your mail status .
