Thursday December 18, 2008 GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN
"My Father has given me authority over everything. No one really knows the Son except the Father, and no one really knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:27-30 William Shakespeare wrote a play that sums up what much of the Christmas hustle and bustle really is: "Much Ado About Nothing." We cook, decorate, and run around shopping and at some point we stop and recognize just how tired and weary we are and we wonder - why? Oh, don't get me wrong I love it, but the past nine years Christmas has literally worn me out. By Christmas day I can barely walk because of the pain throughout my body. Well, when I read today's scripture I almost laughed at myself. If we really kept Jesus at the center of Christmas He would give us rest! Jesus came that we might have life - not get tired from it! Today is Wednesday, in a week and a day Christmas will be here, but will we be present in the moment? Will we pause and experience the wonder of what the Season means? Will we rest on Christmas day in the fact that God came to earth so we could know Him? I hope so. I really, really hope so. Maybe we need to sing that grand old Christmas Carol, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" more during the Season! Father, I pray right now for every person who is weary this Season. Some are weary because of sickness. Some are weary because they are simply tired of facing the struggles of life. Some are weary because this is the first Christmas without someone they dearly love - someone who is with You. Help each of us Lord to let You give us rest in the midst of all that is going on. Give us some free time so we can simply sit in Your Presence and know You. Teach us how to live simply so that others around us can simply live. ******************************************* O.
