SENT OUT

Adam named his wife Eve [Life] because she became the mother of every living
person.
The LORD God made clothes from animal skins for the man and his wife and
dressed them.
Then the LORD God said, "The man has become like one of us, since he knows good
and evil. He must not reach out and take the fruit from the tree of life
and eat. Then he would live forever."
So the LORD God sent the man out of the Garden of Eden to farm the ground from
which the man had been formed.
After he sent the man out, God placed angels and a flaming sword that turned in
all directions east of the Garden of Eden. He placed them there to guard
the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 3:20-24

Since I didn't go into a whole lot of meaning yesterday, I will today.

We now realize that Eve's consequences were physical, psychological, and
social. Some understand "increase your pains in childbearing" to indicate making
giving birth to children more difficult; not to mention that "monthly" thing
more frequent and troublesome. "Your desire will be for your husband" also
indicates Eve (and future women) would have a psychological dependence that
will replace their original sense of personal identity; they would hunger for
their man's role in life, yet they would be forced into roles that would demean
them. Here is the distortion caused by sin itself. When Adam and Eve abandoned
submission to God's will, conflict became inevitable.

Adam too would suffer. Instead of work being something he enjoyed, work became
toil, and life a struggle against nature.

In all these things we see further evidence of the ruin sin brings. Yet, we
also sense a note of hope. What Adam did, Christ has and will repair. When Jesus
comes, nature itself will be liberated, but you and I can experience liberation
even now! We can be liberated from competition in our homes and churches,
and through mutual submission to God's will regain the harmony that reigned
before the Fall. We can be liberated from the desire to dominate others. In
Christ we can be liberated from blaming, from hatred, and from doing injustice.

When our Father sent Adam and Even from the Garden, He had to place guards
around it to protect it to keep them from coming back and to keep others from
coming in as well and eating from the Tree of Life.

Oh, that we could regain harmony!

Father, I pray that one day peace will reign in my home and in the homes of
those who are reading this today. Give us hope.
Amen!
