An open-air preacher was describing the Lord Jesus to a number of children
in a street in the slums of a great city. The children listened with rapt
attention to the unfolding of the Man of men. He had not mentioned any name;
but when the question was asked as to who the Personage was, a boy immediately
replied, "I know him, mister; he lives in our street." The boy knew a humble
follower of Christ who was so like Christ that as he listened to the unfolding
of the Lord's character, he recognized the Lord Himself.-Unknown, Signs of the
Times, November 14, 1911.
Quote: "A neglected Bible means a starved and strengthless spirit, a
comfortless heart, a barren life, and a grieved Holy Spirit."-By F. B. Meyer,
Signs of the Times, November 14, 1911.

Your Bible is more relevant to your life than the shopping center. It is
as fresh as today's newspaper. It is the liveliest reality in all of literature.
During World War II Joseph Bergrav, the Bishop of Oslo, was put into
prison. At first he was allowed to have his Bible and to send a short letter to
his wife each week. When he wrote to her one day in 1942, he said, "The gospel
lesson for yesterday was remarkable. It contained that passage, 'I am come to
set the captive free, to bring freedom to the oppressed.' " The bishop's wife
was called before the chief of the Gestapo police and told that her husband was
henceforth forbidden to quote from the Holy Scriptures. "the Bible is much too
topical," the chief said.
Indeed it is! You keep up to date when you continue using your Bible, the
Word that can change your life.-By Robert W. Olewiler, These Times, August 1964.
Quote: "The Bible is of vital importance in teaching freedom. Dictators fear
the Bible-and for good reason. It inspired the Magna Charta and the Declaration
of Independence."-By Lowell Thomas, These Times, March 1959.

Heroic Animal Stories by Joe L. Wheeler. In his fifth book of The Good Lord
Made Them All series, Joe L. Wheeler has gathered a diverse collection of
animal heroes. Ten of the eighteen animal subjects chosen for this collection

barely knew! As you read these stories, and share them with others, you'll be
reminded that God is the One who created us all and that He implanted admirable
qualities in all of His creatures.

A professor of religion told me that in her neighborhood they had
discontinued their prayer-meetings, "for," said she, "there were only three of
us that met together."
I said, "then there were FOUR there."
"Well," said she, "I was there, and you were not, I think I ought to know."
"Yes," I said, "You were there and I was not, but did not Christ say,
'Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst
of them?' If you three gathered in His name He was there, and that made the
FOUR; but you three could not afford to meet Him, because there were no more."
This woman suddenly began to look at matters in a different light, and
replied, "We will start our meetings again."-By J. N. Loughborough, Signs of
the Times, December 3, 1902.
Quote: "God is in the saving business. He desires to carry every one of us
through, but He cannot save us against our wills."-By David Paulson, Signs of
the Times, July 9, 1902.

Have you ever stood apart from a crowd and wondered how it is possible
that we can all look so different? We are all unique and recognizable. Amazing!
What does our Heinz-57-variety appearance tell us about our Creator? For
one thing, could it be that there is really nothing dry or heavy-footed about
our God? When Dwight W. Morrow was appointed ambassador to Mexico many years
ago, he decided to furnish his home in Cuernavaca with Mexican products, all of
the furniture to be handmade by Indian carpenters. When he found a chair that
was not only comfortable but reasonably priced, he asked the man to make a
dozen for him.
"The senor knows, of course, that if I make more than one, I must charge
more, much more, for each," said the man, obviously displeased.
"More?" questioned Morrow. "In my country it costs less if one buys in
quantity. Why do you charge more?"
"Because, senor," was the reply, "it is so dull to make 12 chairs just
alike."-By Kenneth J. Holland, Signs of the Times, October 1988.
Quote: "Illumination! The Bible is a lighthouse. The New Testament is the
lantern. There are four plate glass sides to it-the Gospels-and inside is one
intense glow, flashing its radiance everywhere. That one light is He who said,
"I am the light of the world."-By P. Waugh, Signs of the Times, February 11,
1919.

Years ago Alexander Duff, a missionary, was shipwrecked just a few miles
before his boat, "The Lady Holland," reached India. Everything that Dr. Duff
had-his clothes, his most valuable possessions, and his library of eight
hundred volumes-was on board. All the passengers were saved, but everything
that they possessed was lost in the depths of the sea.
Dr. Duff stood on the shore scanning the turbulent waters and hoping that
he might recover part of his luggage. As he watched, he saw something small
floating on top of the water. Nearer and nearer it came. He wondered what it
could be. When it came close enough, he waded into the water, took hold of the
floating object, and walked back to the dry sand.
What do you suppose it was? Yes, you have guessed it. It was his Bible,
and of all the possessions that he had on board ship-of all his books-that
single Book was washed up on the shore.
Alexander Duff took the rescued Book to be a sign from the Lord, and he
was greatly encouraged. The next day he began his career as a missionary in
India. The day after that he sat down and read from the Bible to his first
class, a group of five boys, who were seated under a banyan tree. The power of
that Book was irresistible, and a week later the class had grown to three
hundred.
Today if you will go to India, you will see a beautiful tree growing on
the spot where the banyan tree had been; and there Christian students-hundreds
of them-go on special occasions and lift their voices to God in prayer and sing
praises to the name of Jesus Christ.-By D. A. Delafield, These Times, May 1955.
Quote: "Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life."-By J. L.
Newland, These Times, December 1964.
