FAILURE TO TRUST

Don't rebel against the LORD, and don't be afraid of the people of the land. We
will devour them like bread. They have no protection, and the LORD is with
us. So don't be afraid of them."
But when the whole community of Israel talked about stoning Moses and Aaron to
death, they all saw the glory of the LORD shining at the tent of meeting.
The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How
long will they refuse to trust me in spite of all the miraculous signs
I have done among them? I'll strike them with a plague, I'll destroy them, and
I'll make you into a nation larger and stronger than they are."
But Moses said to the LORD, "What if the Egyptians hear about it? (You used
your power to take these people away from them.) What if the Egyptians tell
the people who live in this land? LORD, they have already heard that you are
with these people, that they have seen you with their own eyes, that your
column of smoke stays over them, and that you go ahead of them in a column of
smoke by day and in a column of fire by night. But if you kill all these
people at the same time, then the nations who have heard these reports about
you will say, 'The LORD wasn't able to bring these people into the land he
promised them, so he slaughtered them in the desert.'
"Lord, let your power be as great as when you said, 'The LORD. patient, forever
loving. He forgives wrongdoing and disobedience. He never lets the guilty
go unpunished, punishing children. for their parents' sins to the third and
fourth generation.' By your great love, please forgive these people's sins,
as you have been forgiving them from the time they left Egypt until now."
Numbers 14:9-19

Moses did everything he could to help his followers believe and trust in God -
to no avail. We know that God destroyed almost all people before and now
He was about to do it again. Have you ever felt like destroying your family? I
have.

It was the winter of 1993 - a blizzard. We had no electricity for several days;
our children were teenagers and we were all stuck in the house together
and for the first time in my life I understood why someone would kill their
family and them commit suicide. They were driving me crazy! Their constant
complaints, combined with the lack of food and boredom was really getting to
me. Had it not been for my faith in God I'm almost positive I would have done
something crazy - if there had been a gun somewhere.

When the people we sacrifice everything for don't appreciate us we can quickly
get exasperated with them. Isn't it nice to know that God has felt the same
thing we've felt? Yet, Moses was there to stand up to God and remind Him that
He as a loving God and His job was to forgive. Hallelujah. That is also our
job as well. Will we do it?

Father, thank You so much for Your Word and for teaching us Who You are and
what forgiveness entails. Help us go and do likewise.
