Astoria Center Of Israel Gets Local Business Award

The Astoria Center of Israel, Jonathan Pearl, Ph.D, rabbi, and George
Lindenblatt, cantor has been selected to receive the 2008 Best of Long Island
City Award in the Synagogues category from the U.S. Local Business Association
(USLBA). Each year, the USLBA's "Best of Local Businesses" Award Program
recognizes outstanding nonprofit institutions and local businesses throughout
the country and identifies groups that enhance the positive image of such
organizations through service to their communities.
The beginnings of the Astoria Center of Israel date back to the early 20th
century. Throughout its more than 80 years of existence, the synagogue has
maintained a long tradition of civic leadership and community involvement.
Offering Jewish religious, cultural, and education services, it serves veterans
and newcomers, seniors and youth, families and singles. Withstanding the
demographic changes in the neighborhood, ACI has thrived and persevered. Today
its long-time members mingle with many new, young people who are moving into
Long Island City neighborhoods. With dynamic and welcoming clergy and lay
leadership, the synagogue is experiencing a resurgence of growth and activity.
Behind the synagogue's simple brick facade at 27-35 Crescent St. in Astoria
lies a warmly vibrant interior. The colorful murals based on traditional motifs
that decorate the historic sanctuary were designed by a renowned French artist
of the day.
The U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA) is a Washington D.C.-based
organization funded by local businesses operating in towns, large and small,
across America. The purpose of the USLBA is to promote local business through
public relations, marketing and advertising. Each year, the USLBA identifies
companies that have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local
community and business categories. These are local companies that enhance the
positive image of small businesses through service to their customers and
community.
