Speaking to God as a Friend Men of prayer speak with God as a man talks with his friend. Union with God is viewed as the sole aim of true prayer; therefore many believers in the East reject with vigor all attempts to explain prayer as the endeavor to "change the mind of God". Prayer is not a means of winning God to our side; rather, it should serve to win us to God. In prayer we learn to know the Will of God and to surrender ourselves humbly to it. There are people who pray as though we could alter God's Purpose. For a long time this question exercised me deeply. I received an answer in my own experience. We cannot alter God's plan, but in prayer we can learn to understand His Will for us. When we pray in some quiet place God speaks to us in the silence of our own heart. Then He reveals to us His designs for our good; when we begin to understand His purposes we do not even wish to alter them; we only want to cooperate with them. When we understand His plans for us He gives us strength to live in harmony with His Will. It is quite possible that His Purpose includes suffering, want, or sickness, but in all these things we find our consolation in saying "Thy Will be done." God's purposes work out for our highest good. Once we have realized that, all self-pity goes - all murmuring and doubt disappear. Although the idea of working any change in God's Purpose should be viewed as unbearable, there are miracles which can be worked by means of prayer. That which is impossible to any human being becomes possible through prayer. God's servants experience miracles in their own lives which the wise in this world declare to be wholly contrary to sound reason and the laws of nature. These are the miracles which God works in the praying soul; the greatest of these inward miracles is the deep peace which God bestows upon the tortured and despairing heart. Through prayer we experience the greatest of all miracles, heaven upon earth. Such miracles also are worked through the power of persistent intercession. There are times when one can do more good by prayer than by preaching. A man who prays incessantly in a solitary cave can help other people a great deal. __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages Subscribe to Blind Friends [email protected] Daily Bible Reading [email protected] World Geneva Bible project [email protected] <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< The Group's Moderators and Members are not responsible for advertising that appears in messages or on the group's list site.
