IN THE THUNDER

"Certainly, God is so great
that he is beyond our understanding.
The number of his years cannot be counted.
He collects drops of water.
He distills rain from his mist,
which then drips from the clouds.
It pours down on many people.
Can anyone really understand how clouds spread out
or how he thunders from his dwelling place?
Look, he scatters his flashes of lightning around him
and covers the depths of the sea.
This is how he uses the rains to provide for people
and to give them more than enough food.
He fills his hands with lightning
and orders it to hit the target.
The thunder announces his coming.
The storm announces his angry wrath.
My heart pounds because of this
and jumps out of its place.
Listen! Listen to the roar of God's voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
He flashes his lightning everywhere under heaven.
His light flashes to the ends of the earth.
It is followed by the roar of his voice.
He thunders with his majestic voice.
He doesn't hold the lightning back when his thunder is heard.
God's voice thunders in miraculous ways.
It does great things that we cannot understand."
Job 36:26-33; 37-1-5

The majority of the people in the Old Testament had no power to really know
God. The Holy Spirit was granted to only a select few. God trusted only the
prophets to teach people who He was and how He worked. Yet, like us - few
learned.

Today, we are given a light into who God really is. Time and time again Jesus
proclaimed to the people that having seen Him, they had seen the Father. In
John 10:30 Jesus says, "The Father and I are one."

What can we learn by looking at the life of Jesus? We can understand from
today's scripture that: "We feel his presence in the thunder." No, it doesn't
use those words, but don't you get that? Yet, it isn't used in the same
connotation as the people back then thought, where thunder meant destruction.
Everywhere
Jesus went people were healed. When we are in the presence of Jehovah we truly
find healing for our emotional pain. People could not remain sick, blind,
or even dead in His presence. When a Christian dies, he/she lives again - in
His presence.

As Christians we have the blessed assurance that God is with us in the thunder.
In the times of distress and sorrow, God is in our midst; I don't know about
you - but I have to believe this! When we are still before Him, when we search
our hearts and confess our doubts and frustrations, He soothes us and comforts
us (first we have to get still - do you get that?). On the other hand, when we
are out of line, His Word convicts and instructs us. Hebrews 4:12, says,
"God's word is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword and
cuts as deep as the place where soul and spirit meet, the place where joints
and marrow meet. God's word judges a person's thoughts and intentions."

When we are in the storm we have the opportunity to turn to God through Jesus
Christ. In Luke 18:1NLT, we are reminded, "One day Jesus told his disciples
a story to illustrate their need for constant prayer and to show them that they
must keep praying until the answer comes." It is true. We are to keep the
lines of communication open between the Father and us. When we do, we will find
ourselves praising Him, even through the thunder.
